Lee Asbell's RETIRED TO DEATH is a sensational debut novel, really outstanding, completely engaging and well-written, humorous, observant ... strong voice present right from the beginning, makes you want to keep reading, and you can't say the same for many best-sellers.
Lee Asbell's droll take on murder, best-laid-plans, and one's point in life was a perfect read for a cozy night. Our heroine stuffs pork loins while contemplating her own existential angst. Meanwhile she's got a nagging feeling about her suddenly dead father-in-law. And his suddenly dead neighbor. And the neighbor's suddenly dead other neighbor ... The dry wit and dry wines combine to make this a delightful find. I look forward to this author's next book.
The title of this review for Lee Asbell's novel, Retired to Death, does not refer to the author's writing style or grammar; both are almost impeccable. Fay Hirschkorn, the true gem and the protagonist of this story, is introduced near the end of Chapter One, but her role in the story is not immediately apparent.
Fay is married without children, and currently menopausal. Those who have "been there" or have experienced its effects will more fully understand her vacillating moods. Her love of cooking adds much color to this comedy-laced murder mystery, and probably to her husband Bryant's waistline. Their mutual love of wine takes them on a costly journey, a subplot intertwined with Fay's need to know how her step-father-in-law, Billy, died. Embodied within the mystery portion of this tightly-written story are unexplained events occurring in and around a living facility focused on the elderly.
Billy isn't all that lovable a character and at times I questioned if there was reason to care that he died. Instead, I could feel a growing empathy toward those still living, adding another facet to the novel's 'Diamond In The Rough' quality. The plotlines slowly begin to blur, not from the many bottles of wine consumed (by the story's characters) but from the narration's escalating discoveries. Eventually, all becomes as pleasantly clear as the light of an Andes' morning or as brutally clear as deficiencies uncovered at the vineyards.
Crime can exist in the most beautiful of locales, as well as in the least suspicious of settings. The author's own experiences supply authentic details for an inside peek at business at its shadiest.
